Centuries of history in the heart of Matarraña.
La Virgen de la Fuente has welcomed weary travellers for over 500 years. Built to accommodate pilgrims to the site where the Virgin reportedly appeared by the natural springs in the 13th century, the upper hermitage is a remarkable example of Gothic-Mudéjar style, with panels depicting New Testament scenes and a splendid coffered Mudéjar ceiling, it really is an outstanding cultural site.
The small church down by the river was built subsequently showcasing a Baroque style,
In 1931, the hermitages, cloisters, fifteen fountains and manicured gardens of the whole site were designated a place of National Cultural Heritage, ensuring its preservation for generations to come.
A new chapter.
In December 2022, La Torre del Visco, a boutique Relais Chateaux hotel in the neighbouring valley, took on the management of La Virgen de la Fuente. Drawing on unrivalled local knowledge, a deep sense of place and commitment to sustainability and support of the circular economy, the team have breathed fresh energy into this remarkable destination.
Today, as well as the bar café in the cloister, the restaurant and rooms, the hermitage hosts a variety of cultural events including exhibitions and musical recitals which are particularly suited to the wonderful acoustics of the building, while the whole venue can be hired for weddings, parties and other celebrations as well as business meetings.
